Gemstone Paintings

We have given the name gemstone painting (GSP) to paintings that use basically small fragmented gemstones to create a picture. These pictures are basically like the fine “oil” paintings that everyone is so familiar with except that finely ground gemstone fragments of various kinds are used to create the picture instead of the “normal” paint. A variety of gemstones are used such as peridot, aquamarine, rose quartz, lapis, diamond, ruby, topaz, jade, spinel, amethyst, quartz and several others. The gemstone fragments that are used are ground to fragments that vary from “coarse” granules to a very fine powder depending on how they are used in the individual scenes. The frames are made of gem material also such as jade, marble, or an assortment of other gem material. When these “paintings” are view at a short distance they show every bit as much detail as a fine oil painting (maybe even more in my opinion). Each of these unique works of art is done completely by hand by very skilled artists that live near the Ural Mountains in central Russia. These paintings can take from one day to as long as a whole week to make (depending on the size and complexity).
