
Where-Antelope Springs, House Range. Take U. S. Hwy. 6 & 50. Travel 32 miles southwest from Delta. Turn right on a graveled road heading northwest. Follow signs to Antelope Springs, about 19 miles. One hour driving time each way. Four-wheel drive recommended.
What-Five-hundred million years old. One of the very first forms of sea life. Mid-Cambrian limestone shale. They can be found in sections of hard shale and soft clay shale within a large wash at the right side of the road. The largest deposit in the world of this particular common species, Elrathia kingi. About 45 other species can be found also.
How-The best tool is a flat edged rock hammer for splitting the shale open. A shovel may be useful also. The only restrictions are inside the working quarry.
Tips -No facilities. Take food, a hat, good hiking shoes, mosquito lotion, and water. Watch for rattlesnakes.
