GARNET





GARNET Mn3Al2Si3O12 -- Fe3Al2Si3O12 Cubic

Crystal description - Usually as either smooth, rounded crystals showing basic trapezohedral forms, sometimes modified by the dodecohedron or as highly altered "klinkers" made up basically of a garnet core with a black or red rind of hematite, topaz and quartz. In size, most are under 1/2 inch, but may be up to 2 inches in diameter. May form in single crystals or in clusters of two ore more crystals.

Physical properties - Color -- red to dark brown

Luster - glassy

Hardness - 6-7 1/2

Specific Gravity - 3.5
